Iris is widely used in the treatment of skin problems that are caused by bowel and liver disturbances leading to congestive circulation. It helps with the bowel and liver problems associated with flatulence, heartburn, belching and nausea and may be used for headaches. It can also improve the flow of bile. It can be used in combination with other herbs to help with chronic skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis.
Small doses of the dried root are advised. It may also cause skin rashes in sensitive individuals. By taking it as a tincture this can mitigate these effects.
The origin of Blue Flag (Iris versicolor) is Eastern United States. Iris versicolor is a perennial herb with a creeping horizontal rhizome, thick and fleshy. It grows in Europe, North America, North India, North Africa. The name of the plant comes from the Greek word “iris”, which means “rainbow”.
