Dong Quai root (dang gui), a prized tonic herb in East Asian medicine, plays a special role in female reproductive health. Its properties are sweet, acrid and warm, and its key functions are to tonify and invigorate Blood, regulate the menses, and alleviate discomfort. Dang gui is a chief herb in many formulas used to rebuild the Blood after prolonged illness, heavy menses or childbirth, and to address menstrual irregularities and cramping. Not just a reproductive herb, dang gui also supports the digestive and respiratory tracts in the context of deficiency, and helps move blood to alleviate musculoskeletal discomfort.
